Rheumatology

What does a rheumatologist do?

Rheumatologists are specialised in the management of conditions related to inflammation, autoimmunity and the musculoskeletal system. Examples of these conditions include rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout, lupus, ankylosing spondylitis, vasculitis and back pain.

When to see a rheumatologist

A general practitioner or specialist may refer you to see a rheumatologist if you are suspected of having an autoimmune or inflammatory disease due to symptoms such as joint swelling, rashes, pain, fatigue or fevers.

What to bring to your first appointment

Please bring your referral letter along with any pathology, radiology or other specialist investigations which you have had completed. It may also be relevant to ask other members of your family if they have seen a rheumatologist and if so why.
